| Good article today in silicon.com concerning the rise of the virtual office i.e. the emergence of web 2.0 and virtual worlds technology to replace what we call the office today. http://tinyurl.com/2e5aln
Phil Edholm, Nortel enterprise CTO, comments on the arrival of the next generation in the workforce, what they will expect, and how the whole concept of "workplace" will be overhauled by technology.
It's always great to hear corporate executives speak on these subjects. But let's keep something in mind: there are no doubt peers of Mr. Edholm's who continue to resist remote working, virtual working, and the like. They are ill-equipped to manage others, unless they sit in cubicles outside their office.
Executives like Mr. Edholm therefore need to reach out to these others and show them the way. A bit of outside the box HR thinking would also be welcome. And of course, law departments need to enable flexible work arrangements. The "risk" of unconventional working will be outweighed by both the benefits of a freer workforce and the potential risk of being left behind by peers.
Traditional workplaces that don't adapt will almost certainly experience extreme growing pains very soon. |
