Running a global IT outsourcing process made me realize how difficult it is to establish rapport when you never meet your counterpart in-person. Telephone doesn't work. Air travel might be helpful, but the cost of traveling half-way across the world -- in terms of disruption to work and family, tight travel budgets, and pollution, is often prohibitive. So, the function suffers. Cultural baggage on either side of the telephone line prevails, because the parties never spend time getting to know each other -- i.e. click on a personal level.
That's how we do business today. It's suboptimal, frustrating, and makes everyone feel disconnected and generally dissatisfied.
